About me

Taiwanese-American pianist Ubeeng Kueq is an active soloist, chamber collaborator, and educator. Ubeeng has performed extensively with orchestras including the Utah Symphony, Salt Lake Symphony, American West Symphony, Utah Philharmonia, and the SummerArts Orchestra. The Maven Quartet, of which Ubeeng is a founding member, has also toured throughout the United States with the most recent concerts in Rochester, New York, and the Salt Lake area. His two-piano ensemble, AOE2, won the bronze medal in the 2021 Stecher and Horowitz Two Piano Competition of Music Teachers National Association and has performed extensively in the Indiana area. Ubeeng is also a frequent guest artist for the Intermezzo Chamber Music Series performing from standard and contemporary repertoire alike, including the world premiere of works by University of Utah composer Steve Roens.

Ubeeng’s research focuses on exploration of Liszt’s music and his lesser-known piano works. He has written extensively on the subject of transcriptions through the lens of Liszt’s solo piano treatment of Schubert’s Winterreise. Ubeeng has given lectures on the topic, including at the 2025 Indiana Music Teachers Association state conference and his doctoral lecture recital at Indiana University. His final doctoral solo recital featured an all-Liszt program showcasing works from Liszt’s later years, such as the Elegies (S. 196-197) and Two Csárdás (S. 225).

Ubeeng is a seasoned educator with more than fifteen years of teaching experience with both young and adult students. As an Associate Instructor at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music between 2018-2023, Ubeeng taught multiple levels of undergraduate and graduate group piano classes and individual applied piano lessons for both music and non-music majors. Having also taught at the Indiana University Jacobs Academy Young Pianist Program between 2023 and 2025, Ubeeng also worked extensively with pre-college age students ranging from young elementary school beginners to high school students. With his care and commitment to students, many have developed their own interest and love for music, including achievements such as finalist of the 2024 Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition. Ubeeng’s private studio also includes adult students.

As a passionate educator, Ubeeng believes in a holistic approach to inspiring students. With his doctoral minor in music theory, Ubeeng supplements all his student learning with theory to develop an understanding of musical structure and form, which aids in the comprehension of why certain interpretational choices are made. As a pianist with broad musical interests, Ubeeng also encourages students to explore their own interest in music, with different genres of works from jazz, pop, and folk music frequently taught in lessons to supplement the Western Classical canon.

With an expected completion date in December of 2026, Ubeeng is a doctoral candidate at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University studying with Professor Evelyne Brancart, with whom he also completed his Master of Music and Performer Diploma. He holds a Bachelor of Music in piano from the University of Utah with Dr. Vedrana Subotić. Other notable teachers of influence include André Watts, Paulina Zamora, Arthur Greene, Leon Fleisher, Alexis Boskovich, and Yo-Jia Chen.

Ubeeng enjoys the outdoors and has an appreciation for mountains. He is also an avid car enthusiast with a particular interest in the operation of manual transmissions.
